Charleston church shooter competent to stand trial
A federal judge in South Carolina ruled Friday morning that Dylann Roof, the accused killer of nine members of a predominantly African-American church in Charleston, is competent to stand trial. Judge Richard Gergel unexpectedly halted jury selection earlier this month so he could hear arguments from Roof's attorneys, who questioned whether he had the ability to assist in his own defense. After today's ruling, jury selection will resume Monday. Roof, 22, is charged in federal court with hate crime, obstruction of religion, and murder. He faces the death penalty for the 2015 rampage during a mid-week Bible study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
