CES kicks off with high-tech robotaxis, smart Legos

The CES tech convention, a sprawling tech industry trade show where innovators unveil their latest products and gadgets, opened on Tuesday in Las Vegas. The 2026 consumer conference featured a swath of products addressing consumer safety and health, with many integrating artificial intelligence.

Uber debuted its new self-driving robotaxis, expected to hit the streets of San Francisco later this year. Segway showed off its latest e-bikes and several new robotic lawnmowers set for release later this month. Amazon announced an app store specifically for Ring doorbell users, allowing them to access a variety of third-party apps that meet specific needs for homes and businesses using Ring technology.

The convention also featured multiple creative gadgets, including:

  • Lego’s new SMART Play System, featuring Lego pieces with built-in sensors allowing them to move, light up, and make noises during play. The SMART bricks, tags, and mini figures respond differently depending on how a piece is being held or what pieces are being put together.

  • A portable, battery-powered food allergen detector called Allergen Alert, described as an easy-to-use mini lab. Users place a spoonful of food into a test pouch, and the pocket-sized machine analyzes and returns results in minutes. Allergen Alert’s current model only tests for gluten, but models testing for nuts and dairy are expected to launch by 2028.

  • Pinwheel Home’s vintage-style landline. Featuring a preloaded contact list, the phone allows children to improve their social and verbal skills in a safe, smartphone-free environment. Users can call any Pinwheel phone for free, but calls to non-Pinwheel phones will require a monthly plan.

  • VOVO’s newest smart toilet, complete with a built-in bidet, automatic flushing, and a urine analysis sensor to provide users with health insights. The latest model also includes an optional safety feature for elderly users: If no one uses the toilet for more than eight hours, VOVO will message loved ones suggesting they check on the person.
