Catholic Church declares that Mary isn’t equal with Christ

Catholics should not refer to the Virgin Mary as a “Co-redemptrix” with Christ, according to a doctrinal note published by the Vatican Tuesday. The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published the 20-page doctrinal note clarifying how to refer to what group described as Mary’s role in salvation in light of the mystery of Christ as the sole mediator and redeemer. The document notes that many Catholics, particularly because of ideas popularized on social media, have become confused about Mary, the mother of Jesus.

How are Catholics confused, according to the Vatican? The Vatican insists that it is always inappropriate to use the title “Co-redemptrix” to define Mary’s role. The statement goes on to say that the title, “Mediatrix of all graces” is also inappropriate. These titles, according to the document, tend to eclipse Christ’s work as the sole intermediary between God and man. Mary does not add anything to his sufficient atonement, the doctrinal note said. It went on to say that any gaze directed at her that distracts Catholics from Christ, or that places her on the same level as the Son of God, would fall outside of what the Vatican characterized as authentic Marian faith.

Does the clarification affirm a Protestant perspective on the Virgin Mary? No. Protestants believe Mary was “highly favored” by the Lord, but they do not believe she has an active role in the lives of believers. Faithful Catholics may continue to implore her help, since Mary holds what Catholicism characterizes as a special place at Christ’s side as she works alongside Him.
