Bystander shot and killed during No Kings protest in Utah

Police in Salt Lake City on Sunday charged 24-year-old Arturo Gamboa with one count of murder for his involvement in the incident. Gamboa brandished an AR-15-style rifle in a secluded area near the No Kings demonstration Saturday evening, according to police. Two men wearing high-visibility vests and described as members of the event’s peacekeeping team pulled their handguns and ordered him to drop the weapon. Instead, he ran toward the crowd and one of the self-described peacekeepers fired three rounds, police said. One round injured Gamboa and another fatally struck 39-year-old Arthur Folasa Ah Loo, who was participating in the event. After the shooting, police apprehended Gamboa and the two peacekeepers, and detectives were investigating the incident. Authorities estimated about 10,000 people attended the demonstration and no other participants were wounded.

Were there any other violent incidents at the nationwide demonstrations? Police in Culpeper, Va., on Saturday arrested a 21-year-old man they said intentionally drove a vehicle into a crowd of protesters. Authorities arrested Joseph R. Checklick, and said there were no immediate reports of injuries.
