Bus crash kills dozens in India
Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, chief minister of India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, promised 400,000 Indian rupees–about $4,750—to the families of all 36 deceased individuals on Monday. He promised 100,000 rupees to the more than 20 people who suffered injuries. The chief minister also visited the injured at the hospital and instructed their physicians to provide them with the best possible care, his office said. Meanwhile, authorities were carrying out relief and rescue operations at the scene of the bus crash.
What happened? The bus veered off the road and into a gorge at around 7 a.m. on Monday, the Times of India reported. Authorities are still trying to determine what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The crash threw some passengers out of the bus; others managed to escape the vehicle on their own after it stopped moving, the Times added. The outlet also cautioned that the death toll could rise further.
