Budget proposals fail in House

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Friday witnessed the collapse of a spending package featuring deep budget cuts for government departments. Twenty-one Republicans voted against the package, siding with all Democrats in the chamber in a 198-232 vote. The Republican holdouts said that 30 percent spending cuts for many agencies and increased border protections in the package were insufficient.

What happens now? Appropriations for the government for this fiscal year run out on Saturday. If the government shuts down, nonessential workers will be furloughed without pay, and essential workers’ paychecks could be delayed. McCarthy said he still had ideas for how to pass a spending bill.
