GOP leaders tour the U.S. southern border, demand action

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., led dozens of his colleagues on a trip to Eagle Pass, Texas, on Wednesday. Johnson has pushed for “transformational” reforms in border policy, additional construction of a border wall, and beefing up restrictions on asylum seekers. Late last month, border communities witnessed the arrival of roughly 10,000 immigrants per day.

What is being done to address the crisis at the border? Senators from both parties have been negotiating how to satisfy Republicans’ demands regarding the border in recent days. Republicans have refused to support sending additional funds to Israel and Ukraine until more is done to secure the border. President Joe Biden has argued that the bill forwarding funds to Israel and Ukraine includes increased border protections.
