Bias case not hurting Irish bakery’s business
The bakery in Northern Ireland convicted of discrimination against a gay customer hasn’t seen a drop in business following the high-profile case. Ashers Baking Company, owned by Christian couple Daniel and Amy McArthur, declined to bake a cake in 2014 that included the words, “Support Gay Marriage.” The customer sued and the protracted court battle ended last year with a loss for Ashers, which is liable for court costs totaling more than 150,000 pounds. The U.K. Supreme Court agreed this week to hear the McArthurs' appeal in October. But the negative publicity hasn’t stopped people from buying the bakery’s popular treats. Ashers posted profits last year of 1.5 million pounds, an increase of 170,500 pounds over the previous year. Ashers owns seven outlets across Northern Ireland and employs 80 people.
