Bergdahl expected to plead guilty to desertion, misbehavior

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who was captured by the Taliban after abandoning his post in Afghanistan, was expected to plead guilty to charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. Taliban militants in 2009 captured the Idaho native after he disappeared from his station five months into his time in Afghanistan. U.S. Special Forces secured Bergdahl’s release in 2014 in exchange for five Taliban detainees after years of monitoring him in captivity. Bergdahl’s trial was scheduled for later this month, but he could avoid trial with a guilty plea. He could face up to five years in prison for desertion and a life sentence for the misbehavior charge. Bergdahl’s attorney and spokesmen for the U.S. Army declined to comment on the report, which originated from sources who demanded anonymity.
