UAW endorses Biden in 2024 presidential election
United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain confirmed the long-awaited endorsement on Wednesday afternoon at the UAW’s National CAP Conference in Washington, D.C. Fain described former President Donald Trump as a “scab” and claimed U.S. President Joe Biden had earned the union’s endorsement. Biden made history last year during the UAW’s targeted six-week strike as the first sitting president to visit a picket line. Biden spoke after Fain’s announcement and told autoworkers, “I'm honored to have your back, and you have mine,” describing himself as “the most pro-union president ever.”
How much influence will the endorsement have? The union represents more than 400,000 active auto workers and over 580,000 retired members, who could be influential to Biden winning over battleground states with a large auto industry presence, like Michigan. It’s the second presidential election in a row that Biden has won the UAW’s support.
