Attack on U.S. troops in Jordan kills three
President Joe Biden on Sunday vowed to strike back after a deadly drone attack on a logistics support base in Jordan where about 350 U.S. troops were deployed. The strike killed three U.S. Army soldiers and injured at least 34 American troops, eight of whom were flown out of Jordan for treatment. At a church event on Sunday in South Carolina, Biden called for a moment of silence and then assured those present that “we shall respond.”
Who is behind the attack? Iranian-backed militants reportedly carried out the drone strike. Since the war in Gaza began Oct. 7, pro-Iran militias have carried out attacks on U.S. military installations in the Middle East roughly 150 times. The militias have said that their strikes are in retaliation for Washington’s support for Israel in the war in Gaza and that they aim to push U.S. forces out of the region.
