Arizona deputies arrest man for threatening Trump

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office took Ronald Syvrud, 66, into custody for allegedly threatening former President Donald Trump, the office said Thursday in a statement. The threats appeared on social media on Wednesday and Thursday and indicated that Syvrud intended to physically harm Trump. The arrest came ahead of a Trump campaign stop Friday in the state.

Who is this guy, and what did he say? Police also booked the 6-foot tall, 220-pound Syvrud on an outstanding warrant for allegedly failing to register as a sex offender in Graham County, Ariz. Police noted in an earlier statement that Syvrud also had outstanding warrants in Wisconsin for driving under the influence, and for failing to appear in court to face the DUI charge. Police did not provide details about Syvrud’s threats against Trump.

Is there any connection to Trump’s shooting earlier this year? The FBI said last month that it had not discovered any co-conspirators in 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks’ attempt on Trump’s life, in Butler, Pa.After the assassination attempt, FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress that the biggest terrorism threat to the United States in recent years has been lone actors or small groups secretly radicalizing via the internet. Those sorts of threats use easily-accessible weapons to attack soft targets, Wray said.

Dig deeper: Read my report about how the new head of the U.S. Secret Service took ownership of the security lapses that led to Crooks being able to fire on Trump.
