Are Trump’s lawyers trying to influence Mueller’s Russia probe?
Mark Corallo, a spokesman for President Donald Trump’s legal team, resigned Thursday amid swirling media reports about the lawyers’ alleged attempts to interfere with the Russia probe. The Washington Post reported late Thursday that Trump’s legal team is seeking to limit or undercut Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. election. The report claimed Trump asked his legal team about his ability to grant pardons for his staff, family members, and himself amid the probe. Jay Sekulow, one of the president’s attorneys, denied those claims Friday. “Pardons are not being discussed and are not on the table,” Sekulow told CBS. Separately, The New York Times reported Trump’s lawyers are digging for dirt on Mueller’s investigators. Both newspapers said Trump’s longtime personal attorney, Marc Kasowitz, would have less influence, while Sekulow and fellow attorney John Dowd would lead Trump’s defense team going forward. Corallo worked directly for Kasowitz. Trump told The Times on Wednesday he thinks it would be a violation for Mueller to dig through his family’s finances as part of the Russia probe. But he would not say whether he’s considering firing Mueller: “I can’t, I can’t answer that question because I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
