All eyes on New Hampshire as campaign season revs up
The staff of The World and Everything in It has profiled 22 possible 2016 presidential candidates in its “White House Wednesday” series. Now they take a look at who’s ahead and who’s making moves as the big campaign gets closer.
Gathering in the Granite State. Republican presidential hopefuls gathered in New Hampshire this past weekend for the GOP’s First in the Nation Leadership Summit. One of the biggest takeaways from the weekend was the massive size and scale of the GOP field. Nineteen potential candidates attended, including Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Carly Fiorina, and Donald Trump.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich has yet to tip his hand on his presidential plans, but his appearance at the summit indicated he might be ready to throw his hat in the already crowded Republican ring.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee was there, as well. He is expected to announce his second Oval Office bid May 5. And he told the leadership summit audience he knows how to defeat the Clinton machine, saying the Clintons backed virtually every political opponent he ever had in Arkansas.
Hillary Clinton was also in the Granite State this week as part of the low-key campaign rollout she’s calling a “listening tour.” On Monday, she visited a bakery in Keene, N.H., before offering a few words in the warehouse of a wood furniture factory.
Presidential power rankings. The presidential power rankings are a weekly snapshot of where the race for GOP presidential nominee stands right now. This week’s rankings include new polling in several states and a new national poll from CNN. But the rankings remain mostly unchanged from prior weeks.
