Abrams concedes Georgia governor’s race to Kemp

Incumbent Republican Brian Kemp will remain governor of Georgia. Democratic challenger Stacey Abrams conceded Tuesday night. Kemp had gained 54.9 percent of the votes by the time Abrams called to concede just after 11 p.m. ET, according to results from The Associated Press. The two candidates ran against each other previously in 2018, and Kemp won. Abrams said in her concession speech that the election gives her hope because thousands of Georgians stepped “off the sidelines” and voted.

What is Kemp known for? He defied former President Donald Trump by refusing personal phone calls asking him to say President Joe Biden did not win the state in the 2020 election. He told the Georgia Baptist online publication The Christian Index in 2018 that he relies on prayer and will go where God takes him. During his time as governor, he signed a pro-life “heartbeat bill” that protects babies in Georgia from abortion after a heartbeat is detected.
