NICK EICHER, HOST: A United Airlines flight headed from New Jersey to Spain made an unexpected return trip before it even got past Nova Scotia.
About 90 minutes in, flight attendants got on the PA with an urgent message: Turn off all Bluetooth devices immediately.
The warnings continued.
Eventually, the pilots declared an emergency and headed back to Jersey.
Back on the ground, passengers were escorted off the plane; security crews conducted a full sweep.
All because of a bomb threat. Or at least what appeared to be one.
Turns out the signal wasn’t an actual threat at all. Authorities say a teenager had renamed his Bluetooth speaker: “BOMB.”
A reminder that if you're going to rename your peripherals, the safer choice is “tiny bag of pretzels.”
It’s The World and Everything in It.
