NICK EICHER, HOST: An Australian town crier has a new proclamation:

He’s officially the loudest man in the world.

Fifty-eight-year-old Joseph McGrail-Bateup set a Guinness World Record with a shout measured at 122.4 decibels.

For reference: That’s louder than a chain saw, but a touch quieter than the sound of a jet taking off.

MCGRAIL:-BATEUP: It took me seven attempts just for one word, which was the word “now,” and my voice was shot for the next couple of days.

McGrail-Bateup says he discovered the record while looking for town-crier accomplishments in the Guinness book.

He broke a mark that had stood for more than three decades, when the now-second loudest person in the world shouted, with a trace of irony: “QUIET!”

It’s The World and Everything in It.
