Kicker: Winning a handwriting contest

NICK EICHER, HOST: The new winner of the Zaner-Bloser National Handwriting Contest is 10-year-old Sara Hinesley of St. John Regional Catholic School in Maryland.

Not much remarkable about that.

Except when you consider she mastered handwriting in English, after having arrived in the United States four years ago speaking only Mandarin Chinese.

Oh, and one other thing. The winner of the handwriting contest, Sara. She has no hands.

AUDIO: Things I can’t do, I try to figure out what way I could do it and try my best to make it work.

Sara’s local TV station, WJZ channel 13, interviewed her and showed how she writes in cursive by gripping a pencil between her arms.

AUDIO: I just try my hardest and put my mind to it and—this is what happens.

Cathryn Hinesley, her mother, says Sara “excels really at about anything she tries.”
