WORLD Radio - Kicker: Walking to school

NICK EICHER, HOST: Doctors tell us that good health is cumulative.

Well, a teenager in Canton, Ohio took that idea to heart and made a commitment to better health.

Michael Watson spent many years overweight.

By the time he got to 325 pounds, he said his self-confidence “was zero.”

WATSON: One day I looked in the mirror and I was like, whoa, yea, you’ve gone pretty far.

At age 16, he decided he’d adopt a new way.

He changed his eating habits. Out with the pizza, in with the veggies.

He committed to walk to and from school every day.

No matter how brutal the weather or how tired he felt, Michael walked.

So at age 18, when Michael walked for graduation, he stepped lightly: more than a hundred pounds lighter.

WATSON: You need to want to do it yourself. And each day is a new day.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
