NICK EICHER, HOST: Demolition crews in Swampscott, Massachusetts pulled up a real surprise: a 124-year-old time capsule, and it was inside a stairway of an old school.
Town Administrator Sean Fitzgerald:
FITZGERALD: We were able to find a copper container that includes annual reports from over a century ago.
The capsule is dated April 28th, 1894, the same day of the school dedication. It contains old newspapers, a list of women voters, remnants of Civil War uniforms, and a veteran’s medal, among other things.
Angela Ippolito of the Planning Board says she and her colleagues were aware of the time capsule; they just didn’t know where it was. She said finding it in the midst of demolishing a 105,000 square foot building—“quite a thrill.”
The historical treasures will eventually be on display at town hall.
