Kicker: The waving grandma

NICK EICHER, HOST: The tradition began 12 years ago, when Tinney Davidson moved into a small house on Vancouver Island near Vancouver, B.C.

As she sat by her living room window each morning, she noticed students strolling by on their way to a nearby high school.

TINNEY: I thought, well, if they’re looking in, I’ll wave to them.

That’s how it started and year after year it continued.

Every day they looked in and almost every day, she was there with a big wave and bright smile.

After her husband died, Mrs. Davidson kept at it and developed a bond with the teens who called her the “waving grandma.”

This year, when students learned that Mrs. Davidson was moving to assisted living, they decided to honor her with a special send off.

Four hundred students packed her lawn.

AUDIO: We love you! Bye!

The students decorated her front lawn with expressions of love and gratitude.

TINNEY: I was shocked again that there was so many kids that want to say goodbye to me.

One of the signs they left behind said, “I’ll still wave.”
