WORLD Radio - Kicker: The longest track

NICK EICHER, HOST: If you or your kids have played with Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars within the last 40 years or so, you’ve probably seen those orange connectable tracks.

They’re soft plastic, almost like rubber, and you can connect the sections together to make a very long track.

Well, Jason Knecht of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, said his son loves playing with Hot Wheels, and one day asked an interesting question. The audio from TV station WNEP:

KNECHT: How long of a track can we make? And I said I’m not sure. Why don’t we look up and see how long people have made tracks. And the first thing that popped up was the Guinness record and I said I think we can beat that.

So father and son gathered a hundred volunteers. Local police even shut down a road for the record attempt, as track went down on top of the asphalt.

They used almost 1,400 pieces of track and rolled a Hot Wheels car 2,176 feet. That’s the length of six football fields.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
