NICK EICHER, HOST: Some kids in Michigan found there’s more than one way to squeeze a lemon.
Three brothers had been running a small lemonade stand for years.
But when they looked into expanding their business, they found what many entrepreneurs find: red tape and regulatory hurdles. They’d need hundreds of dollars in permits and fees they didn't have.
But they did have gumption, and took their case to the state legislature.
MIELKE: We hope this bill can come to a vote and pass so that other kids like us do not have to pay fees.
The Michigan House agreed.
Lawmakers unanimously approved a bill exempting children’s lemonade stands from many state regs, up to a point. Above five thousand dollars a year and the state’ll be looking for its cut.
Any event, the measure now heads to the state Senate.
Good on the kids. They didn’t just make lemonade.
They made legislation.
