WORLD Radio - Kicker: Stoned lobster

NICK EICHER, HOST: You’ve undoubtedly heard of stone crab.

But have you ever heard of stoned lobster?

Health inspectors in the state of Maine are investigating a lobster restaurant there that tried to mellow out lobsters with marijuana smoke.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound in Southwest Harbor does remain open. But no longer may customers request lobsters sedated with cannabis before they’re boiled.

Owner Charlotte Gill is a state-licensed medical marijuana caregiver. She called her method, “high-end lobster.” Get it? She hopes to resume sales by mid-October. And she’s quite serious about this, saying it’s much more humane to give them something to calm them down before cooking them alive.

It’s unknown whether pot smoke actually has the intended effect, or has any effect on the flavor, or the diner.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
