NICK EICHER, HOST: Now, this is the art of the deal: the right words at the right time. And in the case of the story I’m about to tell you, it’s important to strike the right tone.
On the night of Christmas, police in Pennsylvania received word of a man acting erratically. When officers showed up, things went from bad to worse.
The man allegedly exchanged fire with police, and they say he managed to hold off a SWAT team for 10 hours.
So the police negotiator tried a different approach. As I said, he just needed to find the right words.
But not to say them. To sing them, instead.
MUSIC: I’m dreaming of a White Christmas. Just like the ones I used to know.
No kidding. The man surrendered peacefully after the negotiator sang to him.
There are still consequences to come. The man’s now in jail awaiting trial on multiple charges. But no one got hurt, thanks to a little creativity and Christmas cheer.
