WORLD Radio - Kicker: Silent discos

NICK EICHER, HOST: Have you ever heard of “silent discos”? Of course you haven’t. They’re silent.

In all seriousness, it’s a thing. At the “silent discos” in Edinburgh, Scotland, patrons dance as they listen to music on headphones.

Even tourist walking tours are doing it, as one tour guide described the revelry. We got this off of Twitter.

AUDIO: Once you put the headphones on you go into a little transported world where we’re all in it together. So it’s all about letting loose, being free, having fun!

But many locals aren’t happy about the gatherings. Believe it or not, officials say silent discos are creating noise complaints.

A City Councillor says the problem is the music is silent, but the people are not—because they sing along with what they’re hearing.  She said there’s plenty of whooping and screaming, adding the walking tourists are the worst. Their loud and oblivious singing irritates people.

City Council has also fielded complaints about silent disco revelers dancing into traffic and nearly being hit.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
