Kicker: Monkey business

NICK EICHER, HOST: Zookeepers uncovered a little monkey business at Basel Zoo in Switzerland last week.

The zoo recently welcomed a baby orangutan by the name of Padma into the world.

And they thought a 14-year-old male living in her enclosure, an orangutan named Budi was the daddy.

But zookeepers were in for a surprise.

They routinely take DNA samples from newborn orangutans because the endangered animals are part of a breeding program.

But the paternity test revealed Budi was not the father.

Which was a surprise. See, Budi was the only male in the enclosure!

More testing revealed that the baby’s real father lives next door.

The 18-year-old orangutan named Vendel in the adjacent enclosure is the dominant male at the zoo and the dividing fence, apparently, wasn’t enough to stop him.
