WORLD Radio - Kicker: It pays to read the fine print

NICK EICHER, HOST: Remember the movie The Incredibles? That time when Bob Parr’s boss calls him into the office? He chews him out over insurance customers who seem to have read the policies just a little too closely?

AUDIO: What I can’t handle is your customers’ inexplicable knowledge of Insuricare’s inner workings. They’re experts! Exploiting every loophole! Dodging every obstacle! They’re penetrating the bureaucracy!

Well, Squaremouth travel insurance company sought to reward customers’ inexplicable knowledge of its inner workings.

Tucked inside a 4,000-word policy was this: “… to highlight the importance of reviewing policy documents…we launched…a contest that rewards the individual who reads the policy information from start to finish.”

Donelan Andrews did exactly that, she read every last word of it.

She went on to read about the terms of the contest, which of course she met with equal diligence. Then she notified the company, and the very next day she found out not only was she insured against travel problems. She found out she’d won $10,000.

Pays the read the fine print.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
