WORLD Radio - Kicker: Insecticide-resistant cockroaches

NICK EICHER, HOST: Let’s talk about roaches for a moment.

REICHARD: Ew, let’s not.

EICHER: No, we need to. This is news, and it’s a cause for concern. Scientists are warning that cockroaches are becoming resistant to insecticide. This is according to a study published in Scientific Reports.

German cockroaches—and these are the most common type of cockroaches—even developed resistance to insecticides not used in the study.

Michael Scharf is one of the scientists inquiring into the problem. He said it’ll be nearly impossible to control roaches with chemicals alone.

REICHARD: This is the stuff of nightmares.

EICHER: Yeah, probably have to return to the old roach motels.

AUDIO: Roaches check in, but they don’t check out!
