Kicker: Idaho’s murder problem

NICK EICHER, HOST: A small city in Idaho has a big murder problem.

Just not the kind you may be thinking of.

When you refer to a group of crows, it’s proper to use the term murder of crows. And a murder of the first degree has descended on the city of Nampa, Idaho. We’re talking 10,000 birds.

They arrived in town to roost during the migration.

The result: sidewalks covered in bird waste and tree branches snapping under the weight of the large blackbirds.

So city official Robert Sanchez told KTVB television that the city needs volunteer scarecrows.

SANCHEZ: We will train our volunteers. For those that are trained, we will equip them with handheld laser devices to displace the crows.

The city is considering only non-lethal solutions.

You can’t kill them, because the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 protects them.

So the birds seem to be, wait for it, getting away with murder.
