WORLD Radio - Kicker: Harmful toys

NICK EICHER, HOST: Alright, in two weeks it’s Christmas Eve. You can imagine the Christmas gift-giving rush.

But a child-safety organization says, not so fast, particularly with childrens’ toys.

The group is known by its acronym, WATCH. It stands for World Against Toys Causing Harm.

WATCH rolled out its 10 worst for 2018: among them, a Nerf Gun, the Stomp Rocket — now, that’s one of my personal favorites, and I’m the one who got hurt, not my boys.

REICHARD: Well, I burned myself on an Easy Bake oven.

EICHER: Well, that didn’t make the list, but seriously:

The Black Panther “slash claw,” you can maybe imagine that may not be a great idea, followed by the Power Ranger Super Ninja Superstar Blade. Here’s WATCH board member James Swartz.

REICHARD: He’s a trial lawyer.

SWARTZ: It retracts and extends, rigid plastic, sold for four-year-olds, potential for serious eye injuries.

EICHER: Imagine had WATCH been around in the 1940s, and what they’d think of little Ralphie Parker’s Christmas morning dream present: a Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle.

AUDIO: You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.

EICHER: It’s The World and Everything in It.
