WORLD Radio - Kicker: Graduation fines

AUDIO: Cheering

NICK EICHER, HOST: Okay, that’s kind of become par for the course on high school graduation ceremonies these days: enthusiastic family members and friends get excited seeing their graduates handed diplomas.

But an administrator at Greenville High School in South Carolina warned seniors during an assembly that parents and friends would be fined about $1,000 for loud cheering.

Graduation is a dignified event— they were told— and should be treated as such.

But the administrator is all bark and no bite.

Both the Greenville police and school district officials said they have no authority to impose such fines on cheering well-wishers.

The ceremony is set for June 4th.

So you can expect a lot of noise.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
