NICK EICHER, HOST: Call it a providential misstep.
Despite his intentions to run a half-marathon, 26-year-old North Dakotan Mike Kohler mistakenly joined in with the full marathon runners.
Kohler says he missed the instructions and simply moved to the starting line with a herd of runners.
He says he realized his mistake by mile eight, but when he got to the half-marathon point, that’s mile 13, he figured: Hey, I’m already running, I’m already tired, why not? I’ll just keep going.
Kohler finished the Sanford Fargo Marathon in just under 6 hours. And he did receive a medal for his efforts — but only for running the half marathon since, well, that’s what he signed up for.
