Kicker: Emergency goalie’s dream come true

NICK EICHER, HOST: He’ll want to hang on to his day job, but his night job is pretty cool.

I’m talking about Scott Foster. He became an unlikely hero last Thursday night on a sheet of ice in Chicago.

The 36-year old accountant stepped in as  “emergency” goalie for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League.

The Hawks lost their backup goalie to injury, then in the 3rd period, their starter got hurt.

So in came Foster — who proceeded to stop all 7 shots the Winnipeg Jets took — and nothing got past him.

In the NHL, the home team designates an emergency goalie, who would play for either side in the very rare event of an actual emergency. For this rec-league goalie, it was a dream-come-true.

FOSTER: “A few hours ago I was sitting on the computer typing on a 10-key. Now I’m standing in front of you guys having just finished 14 and a half minutes of NHL hockey.”

Chicago won the game 6 to 2. The Blackhawks named Foster the game’s first star.
