WORLD Radio - Kicker: Emergency food

NICK EICHER, HOST: Costco is known for selling food in very large quantities, but this might be a first.

The warehouse giant has begun selling a 27-pound bucket of a favorite American side dish with a shelf life of 20 years.

That makes it perfect for emergency preppers, or people just really, really like macaroni and cheese!

The giant mac and cheese bucket, was listed in the emergency foods section for $90 before it sold out.

It offered 180 servings at 220 calories each. According to USDA guidelines, a 45-year-old sedentary male could live on the mac and cheese bucket alone for 18 days and fulfill his calorie requirements.

Not the healthiest of survival foods, but when you’re talking life or death, well, being picky really isn’t an option.

REICHARD: Just add some parsley. Makes it gourmet!

It’s The World and Everything in It.
