Kicker: Cardboard cops

NICK EICHER, HOST: Getting drivers to slow down and obey the speed limit isn’t easy. The thin blue line really is thin, and officers can’t be everywhere.

Just ask police in Williamson County, Texas. That county includes parts of the capital city, Austin. Police there got creative.

They made cardboard cutouts of one of their officers and put them up in problem areas.

Up close, you can’t tell it’s a paper officer. But from the vantage point of a moving car? Sheriff Robert Chody says watch out!

CHODY: Slow down, because you never know if it’s the real deal or not.

You don’t. Sometimes a real deputy is paired up with a paper partner. Sometimes the cardboard’s all by itself. Keeps the public off guard that way.

CHODY: It’s just a creative way to try to solve a problem without really working the problem.

Solve problems without working. Hmm. Maybe we can try that around here.
