Kicker: Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed

NICK EICHER, HOST: Now, you may not have a lot of sympathy for squirrels. But bear with this next story.

A wildlife rehab center came across five sibling squirrels all tangled up in a star formation, their tails tied together.

On the Wisconsin Humane Society Facebook page, we learn that this was not human cruelty. Instead, the squirrels had become “hopelessly entangled with the long-stemmed grasses and strips of plastic their mother used as nest material.”

But it wasn’t as easy as simply reaching in and untangling them.

The center said “You can imagine how wiggly and unruly (and nippy!) this frightened, distressed ball of squirrelly energy was” … so step one was to anesthetize all five of them at the same time.

Then came the careful process of trimming away remnants of the nest without further damaging their tails.

The squirrels suffered some tissue damage from the entanglement, but they’re healthy and beginning to act like young squirrels. Or as the wildlife center put it: bright-eyed and bushy-tailed!
