Kicker: Breathing passengers

NICK EICHER, HOST: A driver in Nevada thought he’d found a loophole in the state’s traffic law. You know, the rule that requires at least two people in the car to drive in the High Occupancy Vehicle lane—without getting a ticket?

He was driving along in his Chrysler minivan when a Highway Patrolman pulled him over for breaking the rule.

But the driver argued there were two people in the car. Because that minivan was a hearse minivan.

TROOPER: Tell you what. I’ll go ahead, I’m gonna give you a warning today. But I’ll warn ya, we’re workin’ HOV lanes pretty heavy today, okay? Driver: He won’t count? Trooper: He is not with us anymore. But for that I’ll give you a warning on that, alright?

The trooper clarified the rule: cars in HOV lanes must have at least two living, breathing people in them. In case you didn’t know. Now you do.
