Kicker: A high-fat celebration of high flight

NICK EICHER, HOST: All over the country, we celebrated the historic anniversary of the moonwalk in all sorts of ways. 

Take Alex Balz for example. He’s an artist who helped to sculpt an unusual commemoration at the Ohio State Fair.

BALZ: We are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon and the Ohio connection which is Neil Armstrong.

Armstrong is a native of Wapakoneta, Ohio. Balz among other artists made life sized statues of Armstrong and the spacecraft crew.  

The American Dairy Association sponsored the statues. And, well, let’s just say they are best described as high-fat celebrations of the high flight.

HUBBLE: The butter display is made from about 2,200 pounds of butter and was completed in 500 hours, which about 400 of those hours were spent inside the cooler sculpting.

Working inside a cooler, yes, on a hot day in July. Last thing you want is all that work turned into a one-ton puddle.
