NICK EICHER, HOST: Lead-foot drivers speeding through a small town in England have gotten quite the scare recently.
Many a driver has rounded a curve in a village near Liverpool to see a police officer in a yellow raincoat aiming a radar gun right at them.
Thing is, it’s not a real police officer. Notice I’m saying “it.” It’s not even a person. It’s a one-of-a-kind scarecrow dressed to look like a traffic cop.
71-year-old Edie Pope made it for a local scarecrow festival. She calls her bogus bobby Speedo.
POPE: Living on a main road there can be a lot of speeding cars. You know, you don’t slow down, so I thought I’d do something to try and slow them down.
It seems to be working.
And there’s no law against it.
Police told the BBC, “if it helps slow motorists down” they have no problem with it.
