Kicker: A belated message

NICK EICHER, HOST: Surely you’ve received kind sentiments belatedly. Nothing wrong with that!

But a Michigan man by the name of Robert Fink recently received word he had a telegram. By definition, it has to be belated, right?

Western Union’s been out of the telegram business for more than a decade.

FINK: My first thought was this has to be a scam.

Not a scam—a telegram sent 50 years ago from two family friends congratulating him on his graduation from the University of Michigan.

Someone found the telegram in an old filing cabinet.

Turns out it was originally delivered to an apartment he shared with classmates in 1969 — the day after he left town.

Fink said the experience has made him reflect on old friends.

FINK: And has kind of left me feeling more like I would like to get in touch with them.
