Our long-time WORLDmag.com readers know that we don't allow any of our writers to oppose biblical principles, but we do allow some tactical disagreements. Since Barnabas Piper's tactical disagreement with last Wednesday's eat-in at Chick-fil-A has stimulated (as of this morning) close to 500 responses to his column, a bunch of WORLD readers have asked me where I stand.
Instead of writing a full response, I'd rather at this time point to the best statement I saw on the matter. It comes from Michigan pastor Kevin DeYoung and can be found on his Gospel Coalition blog. DeYoung notes that, like it or not, we have a deep division in America, with free speech, religious freedom, and marriage up for grabs. DeYoung then suggests three R's: No retreat. No reversal. No reviling.
I agree with his belief that we should not retreat into our comfort zones or stay quiet, that we should not deviate from the Bible to please worldly powers, and that we should not be ashamed of Christ. I also agree that we should not revile or hate our opponents, and should rest peacefully at night not because we've won or become popular, but because we've been faithful. But please read for yourself his statement.
