When push comes to shove
You know the one about the father who was suspicious of the boy who came to pick up his 16-year-old daughter for the school dance? He was afraid the boy would be like he was when he was a teenager.
Recently I told you that my 5-year-old granddaughter prayed to "go to a school where they teach you about Jesus." I also told you that humanly speaking her wish was out of the question.
Now it turns out I have permission from her mom to take my grandchild to Harvey Cedars on Long Beach Island at the Jersey shore. There will be a weeklong kids' program while we adults soak in pearls of biblical wisdom at another part of the compound. I am so excited! Is this not so like God, to come through in ways "no eye has seen nor ear heard nor the heart of man conceived"!
But now suddenly I am concerned about the teacher of the 5-year-olds. What will she be like? What if she is the same kind of Christian I have always been---lots of book knowledge but no heart for Jesus, no excitement about Him, no sense of His presence and power on the hot pavement of life? It's funny how the level of Christianity I long settled for is suddenly not good enough for my granddaughter. It's funny how, when push comes to shove, all the interdenominational squabbles become uninteresting and I know exactly what I want and what's important---the simple and humble and fervent love of Jesus.
Needless to say, I have been praying for the teacher. I'll let you know what happens.
