Call it Gladiator for Dummies. A Knight's Tale (Columbia Pictures, rated PG-13 for action violence, some nudity, and sex-related dialogue) treats medieval jousting like a modern-day contact sport. It features fans doing the wave and singing along to 1970s stadium rock anthems as knights fight through a season of tournaments toward a "World Championship" at the end. Australian teen heartthrob Heath Ledger plays William, a commoner swordsman who decides to enter the big time and become a knight. Since the jousts are limited only to nobility, he passes himself off as "Sir Ulrich." His dreaded enemy is the sneering Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell), who sees the upstart as an embarrassing nuisance. The characters live in a sanitized past with no diseases, wars kept safely off-screen, and religion only treated with a scornful glance. Geoffrey Chaucer shows up in this movie as a quick-witted pitchman and gambler. Worse, the movie's whiny, annoying damsel dishonors the hero by making him deliberately lose a match as a test of devotion. This Tale tries to go in several directions at once and-except for some rousing scenes at the beginning and end-doesn't succeed.
