Unworthy ideas turn into rights

But we must do all we can to protect children

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

Mark “Chris” Sevier sued Kim Davis—the county clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue marriage licenses to homosexuals with her name on the documents—for denying him a license to “marry” his computer with pornography on it. Sadly, ignoring a silly lawsuit won’t make it go away.

Attorney Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, who represents Davis, called the lawsuit frivolous: “There is obviously no right for a man to marry a machine. When you make gender irrelevant to a gender-based relationship you open Pandora’s box and make a mockery out of marriage.” This also applies to same-sex marriage.

Sevier, who has had his law license suspended and has previously been charged with stalking, is apparently trying to make a point and obviously has some issues to sort through. He’s filed similar lawsuits against Kentucky’s governor and attorney general among others. In a motion to intervene in a Florida case, he said that if homosexuals “have the right to marry their object of sexual desire, even if they lack corresponding sexual parts, then I should have the right to marry my preferred sexual object.”

Though the lawsuit is ridiculous, there was a time when the idea of a man marrying a man was just as ridiculous.

It’s all distasteful, and my point isn’t to give Sevier the attention he wants. But I am reminded of the proverbial stopped clock being right twice a day. Though the lawsuit is ridiculous, there was a time when the idea of a man marrying a man was just as ridiculous. Look where we are now, how low we’ve descended. And we haven’t even reached bottom yet. What will our society look like then? Will pedophiles openly advocate for lowering the age of consent, marching as a minority group for special rights in Washington, D.C., or keeping vigil outside the U.S. Supreme Court as the justices decide whether 5-year-olds can consent to sex with adults? It will happen. Our government—the one we pay for—has already ordered public schools to allow biological males into rooms where women and girls expect privacy and safety. Schools, filled with children.

The Apostle Paul tells us that all of creation “groans and labors with birth pangs together until now,” and we “groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.” When sin entered the world, pain and death followed, along with all sorts of perversion. In times like these, it’s difficult to remember that sin is sin, and we’re no more deserving of forgiveness than the unrepentant. Among even the worst of them might be our brothers and sisters in Christ. Slaves to sin need a Savior to release the bonds and redeem the soul.

In the meantime, we must do all we can to protect the most vulnerable, especially children, who look to adults for protection. They are the target.
