When The New York Times floods a zone with reporters and concentrates on ascertaining facts, it can do a good job. Here’s what seven Times reporters working the bombing story told us this morning, as “Interviews with law enforcement officials and witnesses painted a clearer picture of what happened during that chaotic period”:

The Tsarnaev brothers did not rob a 7-Eleven and did not let go the man whose car they stole. They did pull into a gas station/convenience store, and there the carjacking victim escaped and fled to a gas station across the street. The police could track the stolen car because the carjacking victim left his cellphone in it. The boat that became Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s hiding place was inside the search area perimeter, not outside. “It was in an area that should have been checked,” Boston police commissioner Edward Davis said.

By the way, The Washington Post also can do a good job when it concentrates on street-level reporting—and here’s a terrific story about how the Obama administration adds millions to the food stamp rolls.
