Three opportunities for the resolute
Suggestions for those contemplating New Year’s resolutions:
If you have writing talent, resolve to write an Amy-eligible article for your local, neighborhood, or college newspaper or website. The Amy Foundation Writing Awards program, which WORLD administers, offers an annual first prize of $10,000 and $24,000 in additional awards. Our goal is to honor creative, skillful journalism that applies biblical principles to stories about issues and lives. If you wrote an eligible article in 2014, you have until Jan. 15, 2015, to submit it. If you want to develop your writing talent, resolve to apply for a spot in a World Journalism Institute course. College students and recent graduates looking to learn, and to become eligible for paid internships, should apply for admission to our course in late May. Older folks with successful careers but the desire to do some occasional WORLD News Group reporting should apply for our weeklong mid-career course. Our next one, in February, is full, but one in October has several spots still open. If you know of a Christian poverty-fighting group in your community that offers challenging, personal, and spiritual help to those in need, resolve to email a note to WORLD executive assistant June McGraw nominating it for the 2015 Hope Award for Effective Compassion. Include the name of the group, its website address, and a paragraph explaining what it does well. Winning groups gain press coverage and share $45,000 in awards.
