University of Kansas students celebrated in Lawrence, Kan., as the Kansas Jayhawks defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game on April 4. It was the fourth NCAA men’s basketball title for Kansas, and it came after the Jayhawks erased a 16-point deficit and eventually edged out the Tar Heels 72-69. David McCormack scored the go-ahead bucket from close range with 1:21 left in the game, then another at the 22-second mark to put the Jayhawks ahead by three. North Carolina missed its final four shots. Overall, 10 players (five for each team) scored in double figures, with four players (two for each team) tallying 15 points each. The Jayhawks’ victory was the biggest comeback in title game history. The night before, the South Carolina Gamecocks won the NCAA women’s basketball title. Senior guard Destanni Henderson scored a career-high 26 points, leading her team to beat the Connecticut Huskies 64-49. That handed the Huskies their first loss in 12 NCAA title games.
