The disadvantaged unborn

“Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward” (Psalm 127:3, ESV).

Jill Stanek reported that Planned Parenthood in New Orleans ran into some trouble with the planned (no pun intended) construction of a new abortion center (for which she credits pro-lifers). Stanek is a former labor and delivery nurse who witnessed a live-birth abortion and campaigned to stop them. A Planned Parenthood spokesperson attributed the delays to weather, “construction vendor issues,” and scheduling. The organization recently held a job fair and encouraged “disadvantaged businesses” to show up to bid on the work.

Disadvantaged businesses, as defined by the government, are those owned by women and members of certain racial and ethnic groups. The truly disadvantaged people are the unborn babies who’ll end up dying thanks to Planned Parenthood. Ironically, the business owner groups Planned Parenthood targeted for the job fair have disproportionate rates of abortion.

Stanek made an appropriate comparison: “So Planned Parenthood asking minorities to help build abortion clinics is akin to having Jews build gas chambers.” An inside source told her that although “500 businesses were invited to Planned Parenthood’s abortion job fair, only 30-40 people showed up.”

Those on the political left tend to harp on racial disparities in academic achievement, school discipline, employment, wealth, incarceration, etc. They demand that colleges and universities lower academic standards to enroll more minorities. They pressure businesses to hire more blacks or women. They highlight “lack of diversity” in newsrooms and in high-tech companies like Twitter and Facebook. They pop up in front of microphones and television cameras to rail against the “militarized” police.

Yet, the racial disparities those on the left, regardless of their own race, don’t seem to care about are abortion rates. Black women kill their own children at three times the rate of white women. It’s tragic that unborn babies of any race die, but where’s the outrage over the difference? Civil rights professionals who make a living documenting and broadcasting every single racial slight they can dig up ignore the adverse impact of abortion. Oddly enough, some of these abortion advocates consider themselves Christians.

Despite my complaints against the left, I don’t get excited about proposals to ban race- or sex-based abortions. I understand that some in the pro-life movement consider such laws as a way to reduce overall abortions, but how would we enforce them? A woman in the United States can get an abortion any time before viability, and she doesn’t have to state her reasons. In fact, her reason could be as trivial as not wanting to gain weight. Does it matter if she’s killing the baby because she’s a girl or biracial?

The left says, “Well, what a woman does with her own body is her business. Abortion is legal, after all.” Human bondage and bans against marrying someone of a different race were legal, too, but reasonable people know that legality and morality aren’t necessarily the same thing. Unborn babies of all races deserve better.
