The back side of The Blind Side

One nice thing about being a writer with six children is that you are a writer with six publicists. As such, a lot of complete strangers have heard that I met the Tuohy family and wrote a cover story on the movie The Blind Side for WORLD. (Editor's note: Amy's story has consistently remained atop WORLDmag.com's Popular Articles rankings since late fall.)

And of course, people have questions, so today, since the movie just came out on DVD, I thought it would be fun to answer some of the more frequently asked questions:

Is Leigh Anne Tuohy like Sandra Bullock portrayed her?

Yes, but if it's possible, she's even more intense. Leigh Anne is a woman fully in control, directive, absolutely in charge, used to getting what she wants, and at the same time, fiercely loyal and devotedly loving to her family. If I could box up and sell how she does this, I wouldn't have to write blog posts for a living.

Who did you get to meet?

I got to meet Leigh Anne, of course. Miss Sue was also at the house (helping Leigh Anne arrange some flowers). Later, Sean came in wearing a kelly green Briarcrest V-neck jersey and matching Nikes. Collins, their daughter, also came in from volleyball practice and was a total sweetheart.

What was it like to meet Leigh Anne?

Like Sandra Bullock said in response to a similar question, it scared the you-know-what out of me. I knew going into it that Leigh Anne was a businesswoman (she has her own interior design business), the wife of a multi-millionaire, and a force to be reckoned with. She was all that and more, but very kind and also generous with her time---a Mama Bear if there ever was one. The whole time I was there she sipped out of a huge glass of Diet Coke, just like in the movie.

Did you meet Michael?

No. He was busy up in Baltimore, thigh deep in his rookie season with the NFL's Ravens.

Are the Tuohys believers?

Absolutely. Don't be fooled by the intimidating exterior. Sean and Leigh Anne helped start their church and see Michael coming into their lives as providential. Leigh Anne is the living, breathing proof that being a Christian woman doesn't mean you have to be a shushed-up wallflower.

Last and most importantly, did you get a chance to eat some authentic Memphis barbecue while you were there?

You bet we did. Leigh Anne suggested Corky's and it happened to be just down the road from our hotel. It was worth the wait. The woman who seated us knew the Tuohys. Subsequently, the service was amazing, the waiter intuitive, the food sublime. Well worth the 10 pounds we gained and the approximately 1,000 wet wipes we used to clean our fingers.
